Children’s Picture Books

The following picture books by authors Jennifer J. Meyer and Chelsea L. Thayer are a mother/daughter collaboration.

  Mr. Mayor

Chelsea would often see Squirt, the giraffe, peeking over the Honolulu Zoo fence on her way to work in the morning and imagined him longing to play soccer with the children in the adjacent park. This fantastic sight became the inspiration for their 800-word picture book. Squirt was so well liked by the people in the community, he was elected as the first mayor of the zoo. And so, their title became Mr. Mayor. The underlying theme is “a time to work and a time to play.” The main character learns how to balance his responsibilities and discovers that work can be rewarding.

  Peaches & the Great River

Jennifer & Chelsea were inspired to write their next children’s book after reading about the flamingos that were blown off course during Hurricane Idalia in 2023. Peaches & the Great River chronicles the adventures of a young flamingo who became separated from her family during their migration across the Gulf of Mexico during a hurricane. Finding herself alone in Wisconsin, Peaches learns how to fly home from a cast of characters who live along the Mississippi River.
